FAQ
Everything to know before you register your bike — prices, license plate, theft and privacy.
The answers depend on where you live. Prices, payment and services vary from country to country.
Getting started
What Bikekey is and what you get.
- What is Bikekey?
Bikekey is a digital bike register. Your bike gets a permanent, verified owner registration, and you get a set of bike license plates with a QR code and a unique 8-digit Bikekey ID that you put on the bike.
The registration does three things: it deters theft, it makes it much easier to get the bike back if it goes missing, and it documents your ownership — including to insurers and the police.
- How much is Bikekey?
You pay once. There's no subscription — the registration follows the bike as long as it exists.

- Preventive: a marked bike is harder to resell, and the higher risk of detection makes it less attractive to steal.
- Higher recovery rate: whoever finds your bike can scan the QR code and contact you anonymously.
- Safe ownership transfer: when buying or selling a used bike, both parties can see that the seller actually owns it and that it isn't reported stolen.
- Document archive: receipts, photos and papers are kept together digitally — handy for an insurance claim.
- Is Bikekey insurance?
No. Bikekey is a register, not an insurance company. We don't cover losses, and we can't file a claim with your insurer on your behalf — you have to do that yourself.
On the other hand, the registration makes claims handling easier, because ownership, frame number and documentation are already gathered in one place. Several insurers offer Bikekey as part of their home insurance.
Bike license plate
The decal set linking the bike to the register.
- What's a bike license plate?
A set of decals in a very tough material with a unique QR code and an 8-digit Bikekey ID. The QR code is a shortcut to the bike in the register: most smartphones can scan it in a few seconds. If you can't scan it, the Bikekey ID can be entered manually.
In practice, it replaces the engraved frame number, which is often hard to find, read and type correctly.
- Do I need a license plate to register?
Yes. The license plate holds the unique ID that links the bike to you, and that lets us — and in some cases insurers and the police — identify the bike in case of theft or ownership transfer.
You can order license plates directly in the platform under “Register bike”, or in the webshop under accessories.
- Can't a thief just remove the license plate?
It is made of a destructible material consisting of thousands of tiny individual parts. It withstands wind and weather for the bike's lifetime, but can only be peeled off in very small pieces at a time. Using tools to speed it up will very likely damage the paint.
What you can register
The bike, and what's on it.
- What do I need to register a bike?
The bike's frame number and a bike license plate. The frame number is engraved in the metal or applied as a sticker, and is usually found under the frame near the pedals, by the bottom bracket, on the seat tube or on the rear frame. If it's hard to see, cleaning the area often helps.
Brug altid nummeret som det står på cyklen. Det kan afvige fra nummeret på kvitteringen. - Can I register more than the bike itself?
Yes. Two things can be linked to the registration and become searchable in the register:
- The e-bike battery — often the most attractive to thieves, and the most expensive to replace. You can put one of the included decals directly on the battery.
- Accessories of value, or things that make the bike easier to identify.
If your bike is stolen
What happens, and what it costs.
- What happens if my bike is stolen?
You mark it as stolen directly on Bikekey. It's free, and there's no limit to how many times you can do it. The bike is marked as stolen in the register, so anyone who scans the license plate — a private individual, the police or a lost-and-found office — can see it right away.
Reporting it on Bikekey does not replace a police report or a report to your insurance company.
- How does a finder contact me?
Via the QR code on the license plate. The finder sends a message through Bikekey, and you receive it in your inbox on the platform. Both parties stay anonymous — no contact details are exchanged unless you choose to share them yourselves.
Ownership and resale
When a bike changes hands.
- What happens to the registration if I sell the bike?
It follows the bike. Via ownership transfer, the registration is moved to the new owner, and both parties confirm with MitID. The seller thus documents their rightful ownership, and the buyer knows they're dealing with the right person.
- Can I check a used bike before I buy it?
Yes. With the bike's frame number or plate ID, you can look it up and see if the seller is actually the registered owner, and if the bike is reported stolen.
That's the feature that makes it hard to end up buying stolen goods — and thereby unwittingly becoming a fence.
Your data and documents
What is stored, who can see it, and what you can take with you.
- Can I store receipts and papers for the bike?
Yes. Each bike has its own document archive, where you can add receipts, photos, warranty cards and anything else that documents ownership or value.
It's handy if the physical papers go missing — and it's typically exactly what is requested if you need to document a bike's value for an insurance claim.
- Who has access to my documents?
Only you. The documents are linked to your account, not to the bike's public view. If a passerby scans the license plate, they see neither documents nor personal data.
- How long does registration last?
The bike's lifetime. There is no renewal and no recurring payment — the registration stays valid for as long as the bike exists.
- Can I get my data back if I change my mind?
Yes. You can download your material and delete your account anytime in the account settings.
Sletning er permanent og kan ikke fortrydes — vi kan ikke genskabe data bagefter. Download derfor dine dokumenter først.
Privacy and MitID
What others can see, and why we ask for MitID.
- Can others see my personal data?
No. We never exchange personal data between two parties without explicit consent from both. If a passerby scans your bike, only information about the bike is shown — nothing about you.
Du kan selv teste det: log ud af platformen på din mobil og scan din egen cykel. Det er præcis det, en fremmed ser. - Why do I need to use MitID?
MitID links the registration to a verified person. It is the basis for safe ownership transfers: the buyer can be sure the seller is who they claim to be, and the seller can document that they are the rightful owner.
It also means that no one else can pose as the owner of your bike.
MitID gælder kun brugere med bopæl i Danmark.
